WHAT DID WE ACHIEVE? In 205, the Heartefact Fund conducted activities in compliance with the strategic goals and longterm vision of the organization set in different fields and at various levels. Looking at the goals set in the 204 Strategic Plan, the Heartefact has successfully accomplished almost all of its goals. After 5 years of prosperous work and successfully developed its own skills and capacities, engaged new, experienced staff, strengthened its team, widened its network of local and regional partners, in the end of 204 and beginning of 205 the HF started its transformation from the small size to a midsize organization by setting up new organizational structure and developing new program and organizational mission and goals. The program priority areas were redefined, still focusing on overcoming the legacy of traumatic past and establishing of strong regional connections, but also on building accountable and responsible society through using creative content. All activities implemented in 205 can be separated in three program areas: Production, Institute and Foundation. Within the Production program the Heartefact Fund continued to strengthen its work in the field of performing and visual arts supporting building of politically and socially responsible society through creating and promoting engaged arts. Besides using arts and culture as a tool for bringing unpleasant social and political topics to public attention and as a method of creating more sustainable regional connections, in 205 the HF has put special emphasis on providing support to younger artists and cultural workers thus creating a critical mass of professionals interested in and capable of engaging on socially responsible issues. As the part of Institute program we focus our attention to further development of some of previous goals but also on introducing new priorities. Firstly, we have intensified our efforts to achieve sustainable regional cooperation, creating strategic partnerships organizations from Kosovo. Secondly, we contributed to the development of collective memory of the LGBT community securing greater visibility of this marginalized group in our society. Thirdly, through the European Task Force project we managed to empower advocacy for safeguarding democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights in local communities outside big metropolitan areas in Serbia through building capacity of local stakeholders for influencing public policies. And finally, we organized the first Festival of Science, which through the use of different mediums spoke against overall social apathy. Thirdly, within the Foundation program we continued to support grass roots organizations through providing small grants for the activities that use creative content and exchange between individuals in order to induce positive social changes in local communities. Activities wise, in 205, the HF has awarded 4 small grants, produced 3 new theatre performances and successfully exploited 3 existing productions, organized 4 exhibitions and festival, organized 3 conferences and initiated and followed-up on numerous activities concerning Kosovo-Serbia relations, minority groups, discrimination and regional cooperation. Concerning specific projects, the results of the organization s work are as follows, organized in the abovementioned program priority areas:
I. PRODUCTION Through this program the HF supported and produced creative content and initiatives that contribute to the establishment and development of politically and socially responsible society. Based on our experience in the past years and our productions, the Heartefact profiled itself as socially engaged organization that contributed to the establishment of free and open society, but in the same time introduced innovative artistic and cultural practices. The objective of the Production was to use arts and culture in order to initiate dialogue on unpleasant or burning social topics and in the same time to develop new artistic and cultural tendencies. We have put special emphasis on providing support to younger artists and cultural workers thus creating a critical mass of professionals interested in and capable of engaging on socially responsible issues Production program was conducted within three different areas of intervention: theatre, exhibitions, film and education.. Exhibitions In 205 the Heartefact fund continued to develop its activities in the field of visual arts focusing on improvement of regional cooperation, reconciliation process in the region and facing the difficult past. All programs within visual arts program were focused on international, regional and local level and aimed to advance public discussion and dialogue about the politics of memory and forgetting. Special attention was paid to the initiatives that articulated the need of societies throughout the region to work on the bottom-up establishment of politically responsible memory policies. This was achieved through organization and co-organization of 3 exhibitions in 205: - Prague Quadrennial: as partner organization, in 205 the Heartefact participated in multimedia exhibition that represented national selection of the Republic of Serbia at the Prague Quadrennial. The PQ is the most important international exhibition in the field of performing design and scene arts. The main theme of the 5 th edition of the PQ was Joint Space- Music, Time, Politics. Serbia participated in this event with the National and Student selections that were presented to the public in the house of Franz Kafka. The HF presentation that included the multimedia exhibition entitled And there was a word. And nothing included performance of 3 artists that powerfully spoke against silence, ignorance and forgetting. - Srebrenica Today: with the goal to mark 20 th anniversary of Srebrenica Genocide, the Heartefact participated in the organization of the exhibition Srebrenica Today. The exhibition included the photos of everyday life in Srebrenica deeply marked by the past events. Within the Institute Program during 205 the Heartefact was active in several areas of political and social life in the region. The Heartefact Institute aims to contribute to the creation and empowerment of accountable society (including individuals, civil society organizations and public institutions) through focusing on establishing of responsible collective memory culture, promotion of rights of marginalized and discriminated group and strengthening the capacity for accomplishment of positive change in individuals, organizations and public institutions. Taking this into account, in 205 had several priorities: to strengthen regional connections with the special emphasis on Serbia-Kosovo relationship, to increase public visibility of marginalized groups and to increase citizens participation in functioning of local governments. - The Intruders Platform Promotion of LGBT Rights: In 205 the Heartefact continued working on establishing the culture of remembrance of LGBT community. In doing this we established international partnership with Stockholm-based-organization Transpond Ab. Together with them we initiated wider research process that included collecting personal memories and stories of the unstraight persons. Material collected during this research was presented to the wider audience in March 206. - Reconnection: Kosovo-Serbia Cooperation: the HF team has invested lots of effort in 204 in order to find ways to approach the Kosovo-Serbia relations in a new, fresh manner. For this purpose, we have teamed up with Pristina-based organizations called Kosovo 2.0 and Kosovo Stability Initiative. As the result of this exchange in 205 the HF implemented the project Moving Ahead. We wanted to invest in people to people connections in order to create a social atmosphere in which cooperation between the two societies is normal. To do so, we conducted, recorded and published 20 interviews (0 per territory) with various public persons from Kosovo and Serbia. The interviews focused on their former and present personal and professional relations to Kosovo or Serbia but also the ways how these persons see the development of regional cooperation in the future. - The European Task Force - empowering advocacy for safeguarding democracy, rule of law and human rights in Serbia: This projects aims to establish a functional advocacy group of diverse stakeholders with the goal to monitor the implementation of different public policies. The results of workshops were presented in the public debates. - WakEUp Festival: the WakEUp festival was organized as a spin off of the last year Festival of Tolerance. The Festival of Tolerance is the only regional initiative which provides continuous education especially to the youth on the topic of human rights, tolerance and the Holocaust. Taking into account ongoing refugee crisis and raising of the right wing tendencies throughout Europe, this year festival was conceptualized as action aiming at raising public awareness regarding the status of the refugees and the problems they are facing both in the countries they are passing through or on their final destinations. Besides photo exhibition of Marko Drobnjakovic and public screening of documentary and fiction movies speaking about refugees life the festival included life performances entitled WakEUp: 48 hours of awakeness! Performance was held in Gallery 2HUB. During 48 hours citizens of Belgrade publicly read personal testimonies of refugees, academic articles, newspaper articles and reports dealing with the refugee crisis in Europe. This public reading was continuous without interruption. The whole WakEUp! performance was broadcast via internet. III. FOUNDATION The Heartefact Foundation encourages independent and critical forces, accountable thinking, development of social dialogue, active citizenship participation and cross-sectoral as well as cross border co-operations through empowerment of non-profit and philanthropic sectors as important contributors to the building of sustainable societies. The Foundation contributes to the development of accountable society by creating a social atmosphere in which culture of giving is welcomed and cherished but also by supporting small-size organizations and initiatives in meeting local needs and bringing positive social and political changes in local environment. The Foundation program was conducted within two areas:. Small grants program Heartefact Small Grants Awards Program is conducted since the founding of the organization. We find and support small initiatives and organizations contributing in this way to the improvement of communities and societies in the region. We support organizations and initiatives that deal with the traumatic past of the region, the status and position of marginalized groups and the promotion and establishment of accountable thinking, intercultural communication, dialogue and cooperation. In 205, the HF has supported 4 projects and awarded $60300. One of the most important criteria for supporting these projects was that these actions represent an active communication with and respond to most problematic issues of societies throughout the region. Besides organizations dealing with rights and liberties of LGBTQ community, Roma population and women this year, the Heartefact fund also encouraged organizations to deal with other social discriminated groups such as mentally underdeveloped persons and persons with mental illness. Besides this, through our grant program we continued encouraging active participation of the citizens especially youth in public life through education and production of socially responsible arts and culture. Besides educational programs, supported projects included cultural events that promoted dealing with the traumatic pasts and creation of firmer cultural connections in the region by using arts and culture as a tool. During the last year, in cooperation with the Heartefact fund, local organizations have progressed in development of their capacities and skills in the way that supported organizations became able to fundraise for future projects at large donors. Good examples of these practices are organizations Ciklotron, Association Prostor and Akademska Scena who all were able to fund-raise considerable additional support from local, national and international donors for full implementation of their projects. 2. Philanthropy With this program the HF Foundation encourages the development of individual philanthropy in the region. The goal is to raise awareness, promote and develop culture of private giving for public good. As philanthropy sector represent and important vehicle for increasing civic engagement and improving communities and societies, the HF Foundation develops and promotes innovative philanthropic practices and in the same time promotes values of personal giving and builds trust in foundations. - Art Friendly: Art Friendly enables the growth of socially responsible arts and culture through individual and 5
corporate donations, including small and medium-sized enterprises, hotels, bars, restaurants and cafes, but also organizations and institutions. During the 205 we launched campaign promoting and announcing the establishment of the Art Friendly club on Serbian Vision Forum of small business and several public events organized by the Heartefact Fund. Also the HF created all necessary administrative, legal and managerial conditions for the establishment and functioning of the Art Friendly club. First contracts between individual members and the HF have already been signed and these members already contributed to our artistic production during 205. These contributions have been in the form of giving for specific thing or events while the system of regular monthly contributions has not been established yet. CONCLUSION: ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN BRIEF In previous year we engaged in production, support and promotion of socially engaged art with the participation of leading artists and public stakeholders from the region. We successfully continued our work as a grant-making organization supporting more than 4 small-scale yet sustainable initiatives. We managed to attract large number of new potential grantees and to provide them with know how regarding the development and implementation of politically and socially engaged projects. We also worked on formation of projects, new ties, relationships and partnerships across the region in the fields of media, arts, civic action and human rights, as well as supporting and strengthening the opportunities for sustainable and firm institutional co-operation between the countries of the region, with special emphasis on Kosovo-Serbia relations. Our programs were aimed at creating cultural exchange between countries of the region, as well as artistic communication about stressful social issues, and establishing a unique cultural space in the region that will promote new generations of socially responsible artists. The HF programs strongly contributed to the establishment and development of cooperation between different actors in the region from the spheres of politics, civil society, art, commerce and media. We encouraged, supported and promoted the participation of minorities and various marginalized and deprivileged social groups in public life in order to improve their status. Firstly, the HF has supported numerous programs, projects and organizations engaged in the struggle. This resulted in opening space for public dialogue regarding this topic. We also managed to include in this struggle number of new stakeholders including scientific and artistic community who largely contributed to the advocacy efforts, while at the same time continuously building audiences for our causes. Finally, with the purpose to promote and enhance philanthropic practices, to create and foster the practice of individual donations Heartefact regularly took part in activities of various philanthropic initiatives, building and developing its own capacity to advocate and support the goal. Our grantees were also continuously encouraged to use the cost-share method and were tutored on philanthropy development by our staff in all field visits. A special project called Art Friendly was initiated, which aims to foster philanthropy and the culture of individual giving.
