6 Uvodna riječ ministra kulture Republike Hrvatske Introduction by the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Croatia Poštovane dame i gospodo, dragi prijatelji i ljubitelji sedme umjetnosti, cijenjeni sudionici najstarijeg hrvatskog nacionalnog filmskog festivala, srdačno vas pozdravljam i želim mnogo uspjeha u vašem predanom radu kojim na najbolji mogući način doprinosite afirmaciji hrvatskog filma i hrvatske kulture. Nakon dugih 57 godina postojanja najznačajnijeg filmskog festivala u ovom dijelu Europe, prolazeći često burne faze razvoja, ove godine okrećemo novu stranicu koja će u umjetničkom i tehnološkom napretku pridonijeti daljnjoj afirmaciji hrvatske filmske umjetnosti. Festival igranog filma u Puli punom brzinom, bez prijelazne godine, ulazi u digitalno doba. Jasen Mesić Dear ladies and gentleman, dear friends and cinephiles, dear participants of the oldest Croatian national film festival, I would like to wish you a warm welcome and a lot of success in your dedicated work contributing to making Croatian film and Croatian culture recognized in the best possible manner. After long 57 years of the most important film festival in this part of Europe, and after going through very often stormy phases of development, this year we are turning a new page that will help make a name for Croatian film in terms of both artistic and technological development. Without having a transitional period, the Pula Film Festival is entering the digital age in full speed. While last year all the films that screened in the Arena were shot on 35mm films, all of the ten this year s pictures will be screened digitally. Taking new technologies into consideration in a timely fashion, the Festival Council gave an opportunity to HD films to be screened in competition already in Up until now, three films have used this possibility and they were showcased at the renovated festival cinema. However, modern technology has entered the Arena s ancient walls as well. On this occasion, this year s Festival will also host a meeting aimed at digitalizing Croatian art house and independent cinemas, which, without public support in procuring digital projectors and servers, could no longer withstand the competition of an ever bigger number of digitalized multiplex theatres. Digital technology will allow for as many as ten films to be screened in the Principal Section of the National Programme, five being based on the scripts approved at Ministry of Culture and Croatian Audio isual Centre (HAC) calls for entries and five independent films which were supported by HAC subsequently, following the adoption of more flexible new provisions of the Ordinance on the procedure, criteria and deadlines for the implementation of the National Programme for Promotion of Audio isual Art. We should not forget about a record of nine films in the Minority Coproductions Section in which Croatian artists and producers took part and which, according to the European Convention of Cinematographic Co-production, belong to national cinemas of all co-producing countries. Since last year, the Festival has allowed for the selected minority coproductions to compete for Golden Arenas in a separate section of the National Programme as well as to be evaluated and awarded on the part of Croatian and European critics. This year s nine minority coproductions confirm that Croatia is a reliable partner in different phases of film production, from shooting locations to postproduction. I am convinced that different incentives that we are preparing will increase the interest in shooting in Croatia and in using experienced Croatian film makers and talented actors and actresses who have been achieving ever greater recognition in Europe. I wish all the directors, screenwriters, actors and actresses, producers, film crews and their films great success in the Arena and at the box office as well as at as many as possible international festivals. Yours respectfully, Minister of Culture mr. Jasen Mesić 58 th Pula Film Festival 7

7 Uvodna riječ župana Istarske županije Introduction by the County Prefect of the County of Istria Pula je grad koji baštini bogatu povijest i baštinu. Župan Istarske županije Ivan Jakovčić Pula is a city rich in history and heritage. The Arena, the Triumphal Arch of the Sergii, the Temple of Augustus, the Kastel, the Arsenal Scoglio Olivi Uljanik, fortifications, Cultural Centre Rojc, etc. are the symbols of the city that define its citizens identity and their way of life. Every period brings new symbols which change conventional customs and upgrade the existing conditions, every period has its signum temporis which inspires us to think and change ourselves. The Pula Film Festival has also marked Pula and from the very beginning it has remained in the collective memory of its citizens and visitors as a meeting place of different artistic ideas, different personal attitudes and a whole range of cinematic expressions. What links and evaluates the different deliberations and aesthetics is more meaningful and durable than variety. In the first place, there is the Arena and its visitors who come there year in, year out and ritually take part in the presentation of films. Pula and its citizens have recognized and accepted the particular beauty of the Seventh Art that enriches people who think critically and refine their aesthetic criteria. We visit the Arena every year so as to check whether the artistic inspiration of actors, directors, screenwriters, cinematographers and many others will bring the same joy to us who watch, love and enjoy film. I am convinced that Pula is becoming ever more the city of film and that the screenings and events in the Arena, at Kastel, at the alli Cinema and other venues, as well as individual films, are enriching us and making us better persons. I am convinced that we are facing another joyful experience after which we will contentedly move towards the next one that will bring something new once again, and than again This passionate anticipation of film is the proof that film is building Pula and its citizens, its growing love for the city and its beauty. If you want to recognize and enjoy in this beauty, I invite you for another encounter with film, the Arena and Pula. 9 Uvodna riječ ravnateljice Festivala Introduction by the Festival Director Film pod zvijezdama ima li boljeg ljetnog doživljaja? Osim gledanja filmova, svojim popratnim filmskim programima Festival nudi mogućnost učenja i sudjelovanja u stvaranju filma putem radionica i amaterskih filmskih natječaja. alja posjetiti i umjetničke izložbe. Festival živi i u virtualnom svijetu novih medija. Želimo am dobrodošlicu, od srca! ravnateljica Festivala Zdenka išković -ukić Film under the stars could there possibly be a better summer experience? Those who have been part of the life of the Pula Film Festival for the past 58 years either in front of or behind the screen, as authors, spectators or organizers think there couldn t. Led by this thought, at this year s 58 th Pula we have created good conditions for acquiring memorable experiences. There is no doubt that watching exquisite national and international films under the starry sky and embraced by the Arena is an unforgettable experience and that it is the Arena (with its uniqueness and tradition) that has been making such an important contribution to the whole Festival year after year! However, the Festival (and film) has expanded beyond the Arena to the mysterious Kastel, to the renovated alli Cinema it has conquered Pula s streets and squares. This year s Festival will screen 177 films! Apart from watching the films, the Festival offers its guests a possibility to learn and participated in film creation through its workshops and amateur film calls for entries, which are part of the Festival s sidebar programmes. Art exhibitions are worth visiting too. And don t forget about music programmes they will suit different tastes. The Festival lives in the virtual world of new media. Our web pages, Facebook and YouTube allow us to stay in touch with our audience all year long. Just when we wanted to take some time off, after making huge investments, there came a new organizational challenge. This year for the first time all ten films in the Principal Section of the National Programme have been shot digitally and, with the help of the sponsors, they will be screened in the Arena and at the alli Cinema using the most modern and most technically advanced projection system. This is certainly a memorable event for the history of Croatian film. What is it that provides strength and stimulus to a small and young organizational team, strengthened with a number of collaborators, and from this year also volunteers (very versatile and curious young people full of love for Pula and film), during Festival s weeks, to move the boundaries further? Good cooperation with producers, directors, actors, other authors and distributors, and understanding for the Festival on the part of sponsors, donators, partners and a number of institutions and enterprises that support the Festival. And, of course, time and again, the Pula audience of all age groups that loves film, national production in particular. Therefore, I would like to express my gratitude to all the people who keep creating such Pula by investing their good will and energy. The Festival offers something that we inherited as well: the beauty of our coastline and the blue colour of our sea, tasty meals, open heart and a smile! We suggest that you take a vacation and enjoy the 58 th Pula Film Festival. I wish you a warm welcome! Festival Director Zdenka išković -ukić festival igranog filma u Puli

10 Uvodna riječ umjetničkog ravnatelja Introduction by the Artistic Director 58. festival igranog filma u Puli programski je najveći u protekla dva desetljeća hrvatske državnosti, i to u svim segmentima. Zlatko idačković Umjetnički ravnatelj The 58 th Pula Film Festival is the largest edition of the festival in the past two decades since Croatian independence. The continuous development of the programme has reached its peak this year with ten film and ten sidebar sections, a total of 177 films that will be screened over 17 days. After the modest nineties, when the festival flame was maintained despite difficult times, its second decade in an independent country was marked by institutionalization, the past five years being characterized by organizational and financial consolidation, technology and infrastructure renovation, programme expansion and a continuous growth of the number of spectators, which last year exceeded 77,000. For the first time in history, the Arena will host ten Croatian films and a record of nine minority co-productions. The biggest novelty this year will be digital screenings in the Arena, which does not only imply a step forward in terms of organization and technology but also in terms of the programme, because this will make the Arena more accessible to independent productions. We are particularly pleased with the fact that the Croatian Audio isual Centre (HAC) has supported five independent productions invited to join the Festival s competition. This year we have six debutant directors and the programme varies in terms of genre. Two Croatian films star children, there are two dramas tackling love and family themes, three crime thrillers, a war drama and an erotic comedy. We will screen as many as thirteen foreign films from the region that the festival used to cover, seven in the Minority Co-productions Section, five in the International Programme and one as part of Pulica. We will screen their national laureates and the films that were most popular with audiences. The Short Film Programme will screen twenty films, out of which ten are by young female directors, which is indicative of a new tendency in the recent Croatian film industry where more and more women are slowly moving towards making feature-length films. It should also be pointed out that most of the films have erotic themes. The new programme Puladok will screen documentaries linked to the history of the Pula Film Festival and Croatian film. It will be particularly interesting to see two different cinematic approaches to the relation between politics and film in the history of the our film industry. The Film Music Programme will present film songs by Gabi Novak and the opening ceremony will mark the hundredth anniversary of the great Bernard Herrmann and remind us of the strength of the long-forgotten Gottfried Huppertz s score for Fritz Lang s Metropolis. The International Programme will showcase 22 new works: five from Italy, a friend of the Festival, 11 European films as part of the Europolis and six as part of the Meridians, which will take us to Canada, the USA, Iran, China and South Korea. We never select films on the basis of awards won, but this year it happens that we have the Golden Bear winner and two Golden Globe Best Film winners. Finally, this year s retrospective is dedicated to James Ivory, one of the greatest directors of today, a perfectionist artist of exceptionally refined taste and lasting aesthetics, the length of whose career is almost matched by that of the Pula Film Festival, who set the standards (especially in the field of literary adaptations) which are difficult to achieve. Enjoy the films! Zlatko idačković Artistic Director 58 th Pula Film Festival 11
